The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

New Year

Well here in California it's New Year's Eve, about eight hours left until 2009! It's exciting since I love a new year. I've already gotten used to writing 1/1/09! (By accident...I swear!) I hope you all have an awesome and safe holiday!

Books!
I've gotten into a booky mood (thank goodness, I've missed that mood!), and I've been trying to read as many books as possible. Sadly, I can't, since I've got to focus on my studies. I've started reading Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, and so far, it's pretty interesting. After seeing the movie The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I felt interested in rereading The Chronicles of Narnia, starting with The Magicians Nephew. I reread it in a hour or so (easy read!), and found it really awesome. I'll have to reread the rest sometime. I'm also finishing up One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, (I was supposed to annotate the whole thing like two weeks ago, but I never was able to...), finishing up annotation I mean, I read it last year, good book, kind of strange...but I won't spoil!
